Negative emotions tend to be more powerful and have a more significant impact on our psyche than positive ones. Additionally, when faced with uncertainty or unpredictability, such as during unprecedented times, people may feel heightened anxiety and fear, making adverse events and news seem more salient and essential.

Furthermore, adverse events can trigger a range of cognitive and emotional biases that make them more memorable and easier to recall. For example, negativity is a cognitive bias that causes us to remember negative experiences more vividly than positive ones. This bias can be extreme during stressful or uncertain times.

It's important to note that focusing on adverse events or experiences can be detrimental to our mental health if it becomes a pattern or habit. Therefore, it's essential to consciously shift our focus towards positive aspects of our lives and cultivate a more balanced perspective. This may involve practising mindfulness, gratitude, self-compassion, and seeking professional help.
